When we consider the church, what do we think about? Does it mean we step out of our day to day lives for an hour only to return to the same life we left? Or does it engage in going deeper into our lives and transform us? From time to time it is important to reflect on a few questions? How is it that I exist? What do I believe is the source of all life? If I am more than a cosmic accident, then what must be, has to be, my personal response?
At each Lent, I work at pulling a theme out of the five weeks of Mass readings, especially in the Gospels. This year the theme that has been placed in my heart is the phrase: "They began to believe" Let me share a few thoughts with you on this, if you don’t mind.
Congratulations to all you parents who are taking on the heroic duty of Home Schooling. We know you probably hadn’t planned on it, but here we are anyway.
When I first retired from my full-time/secular job, I decided to kick-start the week well by attending Monday morning Mass at 8 AM. I was already used to waking early and getting a move on by 7 AM, so I thought 8 AM would be easy.
You might be thinking…holiness? That seems a little lofty for me. After all, God is holy and I’m just trying to get through the day. You’re not alone in how you feel. Holiness can seem unattainable. Something for priests, religious and a few others but not for me. Nevertheless, we are all called to be holy. If you think that you are not or can’t do it or don’t have time, you’ll want to join us for Untold Blessings: Three Paths to Holiness.
That title is loaded and would be viewed differently by many. Take children as an example. Perhaps as a child you were warned to "Get in here, get in the house, a storm is coming!" Maybe you hurried in or maybe you risked both the weather’s storm and mom's storm.
There is craziness going on in politics and in education. There is changing personal and family values, in adherence to religious doctrine and dogma, and a turning away from God. Maybe not in your home or in our parish, but who would deny the larger reality?
