Proclaiming the word of God, reading the Scriptures aloud to the congregation, is a special calling, one that is unique to the celebration at Mass. As a Lector, this is the only position in which to act at a particular Mass – this is one’s sole responsibility. In most circumstances, this volunteer should be of Confirmation age or older. The Lector prepares, practices, and prays on the Scriptures before Mass, reads and proclaims God’s word to the congregation, and models appropriate reverence and decorum for all present. Proclaiming the word slowly, humbly and in a manner easily heard is a vocation and blessed gift for others.
