There may be no more significant liturgical ministry to the priest and assembled people of God than to serve as an EMHC at Mass. The clergy are the Ordinary Ministers of the Sacraments. Often Clergy need those who are outside the Ordinary (or extra-ordinary) Ministry to help distribute the Body of Christ or Precious Blood of Christ to the congregation. EMHCs should be confirmed Catholics, have a sincere devotion to the Bless Sacrament, and understand that this is the only role in which they may serve at a particular Mass. Handling the consecrated Body and Blood of Jesus is such a grave responsibility, that each EMHC must be approved by the pastor and commissioned to the service.
